About Beechworth

The Victorian town of Beechworth offers the perfect recipe for a successful weekend away from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne: alpine air, well-preserved colonial architecture, top-notch eateries, and a bounty of outdoor activities. The discovery of gold catapulted Beechworth into the spotlight, but today the photogenic town oozes charm, with its wide streetscapes, gracious buildings and green surroundings working to transport you back in time. And believe me when I say this town has a long history, with the name Beechworth popping up in many of Australia’s biggest historical moments, both famous and infamous.

The fast-growing culinary reputation of Beechworth means that the town is now firmly on the holiday wish list of every gourmet traveller. From country institutions like the Beechworth Bakery, to the two hatted brilliance of chef Michael Ryan’s Provenwangarance restaurant, the foodie scene is well and truly alive and thriving in Beechworth. So ensure you pack your appetite when you head to Beechworth, with a healthy array of cafes, wineries, pubs and fine restaurants awaiting you!

The lush, alpine location of Beechworth mean’s there’s also plenty to see and do for those that enjoy the great outdoors. There are numerous walking and bike riding trails that weave through old goldfields, national parks and through town; or pack a picnic and head to Woolshed Falls just five minutes out of Beechworth – the falls are particularly spectacular after heavy rainfall.

Old Beechworth Gaol

With such a rich, thrilling history, the Old Beechworth Gaol is a must-visit attraction for anyone with an interest in some of Australia’s biggest historical moments. It’s here at the gaol that all four members of the Kelly gang – plus Ned’s own mother – were at some time imprisoned. The heritage-listed gaol, built between 1859 and 1864 has plenty to see and do, and offers four different tours visitors can join in on – with the night tour a particularly chilling experience!

Bridge Road Brewers

Looking for the best spot in Beechworth to spend a lazy afternoon? Look no further than craft beer brewery, Bridge Road Brewers. Located in the heart of town, this is the ultimate beer destination, with visitors able to taste 10 award winning ales and ciders. There’s even a brewery tour every Saturday, for those who want to get up close and personal with the brewing experience. All that drinking can work up an appetite though, so we recommend one of the delicious pizzas from the pizzeria, enjoyed in the charming courtyard, of course.

Mount Buffalo National Park

With 31,000ha of parkland to explore, and more than 90k of walking trails, it’s fair to say there is a lot of Mount Buffalo National Park on offer to discover! Situated roughly 60km north of Beechworth, pay a visit to the park and you won’t be disappointed. Waterfalls, granite cliffs and rocky outcrops are just some of the magnificent natural attractions, and the park is teeming with wildlife. Of the many walking trails to choose from, Horn Track is a highlight, which goes to the highest point of Mount Buffalo and rewards bushwalkers with incredible views over Mount Buffalo Gorge.

The banks of Lake Sambell are the place to be during the summer months in Beechworth, with warm temperatures, sunny skies, and the cool lake combining to create the ideal summer holiday destination. Ask the locals however, and they’ll tell you nothing rivals Beechworth in the beauty stakes during autumn.
