Guyra, NSW: Destination Guide

Rich farming land and fishing hot spots are just some of the natural wonders Guyra is home to. This high-flying town at the top of the Great Dividing Range will have you feeling on top of the world when you visit!

About Guyra

Head to the uppermost plateau of the Great Dividing Range, and you’ll find the highest town in the Northern Tablelands: Guyra. This geographical blessing has seen Guyra become renowned as a place of breathtaking natural beauty, as it is surrounded by rugged peaks, wild gorges, and no less than four world class National Parks.

Visit at the right time and you might even be lucky enough to see snow fall over the town. Guyra is more than just a pretty face though, and the streets tell a tale of pioneering success and pastoral splendour.

Things to do in Guyra

You might be surprised to hear it, but Guyra is actually quite a hot spot for water sport aficionados. Despite being 1330m above sea level, the presence of two dams – Copeton and Malpas – means water skiers, rowers, kayakers and sailors are spoilt for choice in terms of where they can get their water fix. The nearby national parks, including Cathedral Rock, Guy Fawkes River and the New England National Park are also great options for fishing, canoeing and swimming, not to mention the usual national park activities: hiking, rock climbing, bird watching and mountain bike riding.

Meander through the streets of Guyra, and you’ll also find cafes and shops, the Historical Museum (housed in the old Shire Council Chambers), a fantastic playground and the Guyra Gold Course. So there’s absolutely no reason to be bored in Guyra!

Lamb and Potato Festival

Guyra has long been a prime producer of meat and potatoes, so what better way to celebrate the industry than with a Lamb and Potato Festival? The popular event, held annually in January, is a celebration of all things lamb and potatoes, with farmers invited to showcase their delicious local produce. A variety of tasty lamb and potato meals are served, while information sessions on preparing and cooking lamb are also held. Entertainment, activities and plenty of meat and potato themed stalls are also on offer, and the festival is held right next to the giant lamb sculpture, naturally.

Mother of Ducks Lagoon

A bird-watcher’s paradise, the Mother Of Ducks Lagoon is a peaceful retreat located just on the outskirts of Guyra. The large body of water, which has a 14km circumference, sits in a silted volcanic crater. The high altitude of the wetlands also adds to the unique qualities of the reserve, which is a vital breeding place for many freshwater wetland birds, and a popular rest stop for migratory birds. An observation deck, picnic spots and a boarded walkway make it an easily accessible and popular attraction in the Guyra region.
