With a truly unique location directly opposite the beautiful beach and surrounded by the Otways’ mesmerising eucalypt forest, it’s not surprising the BIG4 Wye River Holiday Park is such a popular, family-friendly holiday destination.
The Big4 Wye River Holiday Park is located on Victoria’s spectacular Great Ocean Road, between Lorne and Apollo Bay and about 2.5 hours from Melbourne via the coast. Set on 25 acres, Big4 Wye River has plenty of open space and holds up to 1000 guests. As we visited at a fairly quiet time of year, after the September school holidays, it’s hard to imagine the park full to the brim with that many visitors, as it is for the entirety of each summer.
Wye River Beach is patrolled by the local surf lifesaving club during the busy periods, and an open broad water at the river mouth is a great spot for kids to play. Serene walking tracks run along Wye River into the Otways, and are accessible directly from the park. Wye River Beach also has great year-round fishing off the beach on the point; and the river is perfect for family fishing, with a fishing-friendly platform at the front of the park.
The park has several accommodation options including one-, two- and three-bedroom holiday units, which are all well-appointed and family-friendly. You can choose between more secluded locations or those directly opposite the children play area to keep a visual on the kids. There are large sites on lush green grass designated for caravan and camping, with many situated on the river’s edge. But the top accommodation is in the park’s Beach House. This is a two-storey, four-bedroom holiday house set up to cater for larger extended families or people wanting to share accommodation, and is only a 200m walk to the beach.
Laundry facilities and barbecues, along with the camp kitchen, are also available to guests.
During the busy season, the park runs an extensive list of activities and shows for guests. Families can set up in the bowl at sunset, with blankets and treats and watch a movie on the giant 4m outdoor movie cinema. And live music in the afternoon accompanied by Otway Estate wine and fresh wood-fired pizzas are a great way to finish after a relaxing day at the beach.
Kids Club activities run daily through the summer, and farm petting zoos are a massive hit with the kids. Fresh crepes made to order are available in the park from the mobile La Crepe Maison which sets up every season. Go Ride a Wave is also set up in the park over summer. Surf lessons and surf board hire can all be booked direct through the park.
Big4 Wye River Holiday Park is currently working on plans for an expansion of the park, which includes new accommodation options and children’s facilities, a water play centre, bike and forest track plus a multipurpose conference centre, to name a few.
